Made by hand, because many hands
make light industry
Shaped by hand in a folk tradition
Practice, practical
Carved by hand from core materials

COLLECTION COMMUNIQUÉ 015
INDUSTRY in all its guises is at the very heart of our project. We thrill to the thund’rous clamour of heavy industry; and at the same time there will always be a fond place in our soul for the studied craftwork of the cottage industry. For in every product of honest labour we find innate harmony of form, its appeal shaped by its essential utility. These are our arts: applied, not decorative!
Turn, turn and turn again; to every thing there is a season. And against this constant turning – the swift revolutions of the lathe, the spinning of the potter’s wheel, the axial rotations of the planet itself – we coax with deft hands new forms, new shapes, new structures, endlessly recast yet eternally practical. The most ancient of crafts come around again, primitive in finish while charged with fresh purpose.
In checked aprons we shape and sculpt and sew, the fluid patterns of slipware slipping into the cords of our workwear. With pioneering hands we stitch together a quiltwork of influences, the comfort blankets of folk memory and the learnt trades of the ages. And just as the rapid spinning of a wheel gives tensile strength to raw wool, or lends the centrifugal force with which a potter summons up earthenware, so too, as the seasons turn, is our workwear spun anew.
