FELT & FOIL THE TINKERS TEXTILES

Toogood began with rebellious play. The earliest clothing collections incorporated unconventional materials. Gaffer tape, binbags, industrial felt. Collection 019 celebrates the experimental origins of the studio, classics are remade in shiny showerproof silver foil. Along with grey felt left with raw edges, you can trace the journey of Erica’s scissors along the seams of your garment.

THE TINKER IS ATTRACTED TO TIN,
MORE THAN GOLD

In the past, we've made coats out of tar poured into tarpaulin, melted dustbin liners, cling film and silver gaffer tape. When I worked at World Of Interiors I was so inspired by my editor Min Hogg, how she would make curtains out of tablecloths. Always ignoring the rules.” – Faye Toogood

FELT & FOIL THE TINKERS TEXTILES

Toogood began with rebellious play. The earliest clothing collections incorporated unconventional materials. Gaffer tape, binbags, industrial felt. Collection 019 celebrates the experimental origins of the studio, replacing ephemeral materials with carefully developed, elevated textiles that are built to last.

Toogood’s classic Explorer Coat and Roper Skirt are remade in silver foil. This technical fabric is showerproof and as shiny as Andy Warhol’s balloons.

MATERIALS

"Materials are the starting point of everything we do. There's a big area dedicated to it in the studio, I've always called it my jewellery box. I’ll pull pieces from this library and see how they talk to each other. I like the fact that if I take a Roly Poly chair and I do it in plastic, bronze glass, aluminium, or gold leaf, every time it has a completely different connotation. It's the same shape, but I just changed the material." - Faye Toogood

Discover more in Faye's new monograph. The first in-depth look at all aspects of Faye Toogood's work, from clothes and furniture, to installations and interior design. Written by Alistair O'Neill, the book explores Toogood's unique approach to design through the studio's guiding principles: drawing, material, sculpture and landscape.
