Spade Chair Aluminium
Made to order
Spade chair has an elegant, simple line inspired by a three-legged milking stool and the handle of a gardening tool. Sand-cast in solid aluminium, the surface retains distinct marks from the casting process. A brushed and ground finish gives the metal an irregular, molten-like character.

HOW SPADE IS MADE
Spade is the first chair designed by Faye Toogood and establishes many of the principles that continue through her work. The design takes its name and form from a garden spade, combining the logic of a functional tool with the familiarity of traditional furniture.
A continuous profile runs from seat to legs, with a shallow seat dish set into a pared-back structure. Across the Spade family, form is reduced to its essentials, with material and process allowed to remain visible.
Originally made in sycamore, Spade has since been realised in cast aluminium and rubber-finished variants. Each material introduces a different surface quality, while retaining the same underlying geometry and restraint.

“Spade was the first piece of furniture I designed. I wanted to get across something rural, a milking stool mixed with a spade. The Spade feels less folky now with its black rubber finish”
- Faye Toogood

SPADE COLLECTION

Materials & Process
At the heart of the studio is a restless spirit of experimentation, and a deep seated respect for materials. These two pillars of creativity and craft can be found in each piece, from the ironically plump Roly- Poly in glowing raw fibreglass, to the hardy Cobble collection finished in laboratory- grade ceramic glaze
