Toogood collaborated with Italian manufacturer cc-tapis to create two bespoke collections of handmade rugs entitled “Doodles” and “Inventory”.
The collection of six designs encapsulate the designer’s inimitable playfulness. Their overarching aesthetic is painterly, abstract and free-thinking: a response to Toogood’s preoccupation with “tinkering” to explore new styles intuitively and without boundaries. The “Doodles” collection draws on these techniques by using offcuts and appliquéd cords to create collage-style assemblages, with graphic stitching details that form curious patterns to connect the playful cut-out shapes.
The collection features 40 individually dyed colours to guarantee soft and subtle shading. The unique combination of thick and fine yarns produces a distinctive finish, while the pile of the rug is hand-cut, creating differing heights and textures from smooth to shaggy.
The wide range of materials, patterns and haberdashery in the Toogood archives provided the initial inspiration behind these designs, which translate postindustrial influences such as vulcanised rubber, distressed plaster and security mesh into raw yet gentle furnishings. The resultant rugs experiment with a variety of quilting, applique and stitching techniques: The designs are available in a restrained palette of cream, charcoal and raw, undyed tones.
cc-tapis rugs are exclusively hand-knotted in Nepal with Himalayan wool by Tibetan artisans using eco-friendly wools and silks.
